Communicating Your Research to Non Specialists - ½ day
Researchers rarely need convincing of the importance of disseminating their work to peers. There is however an increasing requirement to explain research to stakeholders and other non-specialists. Such communication requires a unique set of skills. Developing the ability to deconstruct the technical jargon and explain research in accessible, user-friendly language is crucial for survival in the modern academic world.
Communicating to non specialists is also a useful method of developing the public’s understanding of academic disciplines as well as a good way of improving individual researcher visibility. It has also been described as vital for career development.
This half day session will focus upon and explore the techniques of mass and individual communication from a verbal perspective although quick tips will also be provided in respect of using the print media for disseminating your research.
