Training Consultancy is becoming increasingly involved in Roberts training
for a number of graduate schools. The consultancy has also worked within
other departments within universities at graduate and postgraduate levels. We currently offer three courses as standard packages but please feel free to contact us if you wish to discuss specific requirements. “As Director of Postgraduate Training at the University of Exeter, I rely on external trainers to deliver parts of our core training programme for PhD students. However, it can sometimes be difficult to find the right sort of people who can relate to our postgraduates in both a professional and personal way. BSPS Training, through Richard Payne, has done both and delivers two communication sessions for our students, including presenting research orally, and communicating to non-specialists. Richard has worked in a very collaborative and positive way with myself to develop the workshops; the result has been overwhelmingly positive. From our evaluations, every workshop has had a very high 'usefulness' rating by our postgraduate research students. Furthermore, across both workshops, 100% of the participants stated that they would 'positively recommend' the session to other students, perhaps in their research group, or school. This is an exceptional quality rating, and is in no small part down to the professionalism, personality and energy of BSPS training. The Graduate School at the University of Exeter looks forwards to working with BSPS in the future to enhance the learning experience of our PhD students." Furthermore, students are often required to present orally as a part of their course assessment. It is therefore vital that they are provided with some structured training. This one day programme covers the core skills of preparing and delivering an oral presentation and will include a structural model which students will be able to utilise on the day and beyond. This version of the highly popular course we already run for post doctoral researchers will focus specifically on presenting to academic audiences and funders, although advice will also be provided for those who wish to present at academic conferences. For more information on this course click here Communicating to Non Specialists - ½ day There is an increasing requirement for researchers to explain their work to non specialist audiences. The general theme of this requirement is to enhance the public understanding of academic research. In some cases this may even be a condition of funding. Promoting work to more general audiences will also be beneficial to researchers as it can improve their visibility and enhances their personal profile. Communicating with non specialists may also be a valuable career development tool as there may be influential sectors contained within generic audiences. However, the ability of researchers to explain their work in clearly understood language does not always come naturally; this can sometimes be for one simple reason - a lack of training in the area of communication technique. The aim of this half day workshop is to enhance the ability of students to communicate and disseminate the key aspects of their research to non specialist audiences. The focus of this workshop will be on oral communication. As a result of this workshop students will be able to:- For more information on this course click here Succeeding at Recruitment Interviews – 1 day or ½ day The recruitment interview is the ideal opportunity to impress a potential employer – but how exactly does one impress?
